The GMC’s rule is short and strict. Checked against the GMC website on 31 October 2026.
- You must pass PLAB 2 within two years of passing PLAB 1.
- Your pass date is the date you took the test, not the date your results were issued.
- If you pass PLAB 1, you can apply for PLAB 2 straight away in GMC Online, but not before the results have been issued.
A worked example (dates for illustration only)
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| You sit PLAB 1 | 11 February 2027 |
| Your PLAB 1 result is published | 25 March 2027 |
| Deadline to pass PLAB 2 | Two years from 11 February 2027, the exam date |
| What to do | Count from the exam date and leave time for a possible retake |
The example uses a listed PLAB 1 sitting date only as an illustration of the counting rule. It is not a prediction of your own result.
How to plan around it
- Check your English-test validity too: see IELTS and OET requirements.
- Book PLAB 2 as soon as your PLAB 1 result is released: see booking and results.
- Leave room for one failed attempt inside the window. See attempts.
- Budget for travel to Manchester: see PLAB 2 academies and fees.
The summary of every rule on this site is in PLAB key facts and dates.
