PLAB 2 has no single fixed pass mark. Your result depends on how you perform in each station and across the whole exam. Checked against the GMC website on 31 October 2026.
Step 1: each station
Examiners assess you in each station against three marking domains:
- Data gathering, technical and assessment skills
- Clinical management skills
- Interpersonal skills
The examiner also gives an overall judgement of your performance in the station: Unsatisfactory, Borderline, Satisfactory or Good. The GMC says this judgement does not decide whether you pass the station and is not in your results, but it is used to calculate each station’s pass score with the borderline regression method.
Step 2: the overall result
To pass the exam overall, you must do both of the following:
- Meet or exceed the overall pass mark. The GMC adds up the pass scores of all the stations in the exam and then adds one standard error of measurement.
- Pass a minimum number of stations, worked out with a regression method.
What helps in practice
- Every station counts towards both conditions, so consistency across stations matters more than being brilliant in a few.
- Interpersonal skills are marked in every station, not only communication stations: see communication frameworks.
- Practise full timed rounds with a study partner.
