PLAB is for international medical graduates who want GMC registration and do not qualify through another route. Eligibility rules are set by the GMC and can change, so use this page as a checklist and confirm every line on the GMC website.
| Requirement | What it means in practice | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| Primary medical qualification (PMQ) | A degree from a medical school the GMC recognises | World Directory of Medical Schools and the GMC’s acceptable-qualifications information |
| Verification of your degree | The awarding body confirms your degree, usually through ECFMG EPIC | Start early: it can take weeks to months |
| Internship or equivalent | Some countries require a year after graduation before full registration | Read the GMC’s rules for your country; you may get provisional registration |
| English language | An accepted test at the required scores | See IELTS and OET requirements |
| Identity | A valid passport and consistent names across documents | See GMC Online account guide |
Common reasons candidates get stuck
- The medical school or degree title does not match the GMC’s list. Contact the GMC before booking exams.
- The name on the passport, degree and English test differ. Fix this first.
- Assuming PLAB is the only route. Some doctors qualify for registration through an other route, such as a recognised postgraduate qualification.
