Eligibility for PLAB, and for GMC registration after it, depends mainly on your primary medical qualification (PMQ): the degree that first qualified you as a doctor.
- The PMQ must be awarded by a medical school the GMC recognises. Check the school against the World Directory of Medical Schools and the GMC’s published list of acceptable qualifications.
- The GMC verifies your PMQ with the awarding body, normally through the ECFMG EPIC service, so you pay for and start a verification early.
- Some countries require an internship (typically 12 months) before you are fully qualified. If you have not completed it, the GMC may give you provisional rather than full registration, and you would need to complete supervised training. Check the current rule for your country.
- You need to be able to prove your identity and your English-language ability (next page).
