GMC Online account: create it, sign in and fix problems

What a GMC Online account is, why you need one before PLAB, and how to avoid the name and document mistakes that delay candidates.

6 minute read · reviewed 24 October 2026

GMC Online is the General Medical Council’s secure portal. You use it to book PLAB 1 and PLAB 2, to upload and track your documents and, after you pass, to apply for registration. Without an account you cannot book either exam, so it is the first practical step on the PLAB route.

Create the account

  1. Go to the GMC website and choose the option to create a GMC Online account. Always start from the GMC’s own pages, never from a link in a message or social-media post.
  2. Enter your name exactly as it appears on your passport, including the order of names and any accents. A mismatch is the most common cause of delay later.
  3. Use an email address that you will still control in two years, and keep the password in a password manager.
  4. Complete any identity or verification steps the GMC asks for and keep the confirmation emails.

Signing in

Use the sign-in link on the GMC website. If you cannot sign in, use the account-recovery option on the sign-in page, check for typing errors and the correct email address, and then contact the GMC through its official contact details. Nobody else can reset your GMC account.
