  • Out of programme for research (OOPR): undertake an MD or PhD; time spent may count towards training with approval.
  • Out of programme for training/experience (OOPT/OOPE): gain approved experience elsewhere.
  • Clinical fellowships: NHS, university or overseas posts, often one year.
  • Funding: NIHR, Wellcome Trust, Royal Colleges, charities and universities.
  • Approval: needs your training programme director, deanery and the GMC where it affects the CCT.

How to choose a fellowship

  • Start with the skills you need for the job you want, then find the units that train them.
  • Ask recent fellows about case volume, supervision and whether the post counts toward your CCT.
  • Plan finances and family needs: some fellowships are unfunded or overseas.
