  1. Check the person specification for the specialty and level (CT1, ST1, ST3…).
  2. Create an Oriel account and keep your details current.
  3. Submit the application in the national window, which for most specialties opens in the winter.
  4. Complete the shortlisting assessment (self-assessment, a multi-specialty recruitment assessment, or both).
  5. Attend an interview or selection centre if invited.
  6. Rank your preferred programmes and respond to offers by the deadline.
  • Rounds are timed so that offers are made in spring for August starts. Check NHS England for this year’s schedule and the date of the first offers.
  • Self-assessment (portfolio) scoring awards points for qualifications, publications, presentations, teaching, audit and leadership.
  • The Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment (MSRA) is used by several specialties, including General Practice, and tests clinical problem solving and professional dilemmas.
  • Under the Prioritisation Act, offers are made first to the priority group.

Your checklist

  • Read my specialty’s person specification
  • Created an Oriel account
  • Practised for the MSRA
