Indemnity and insurance

Why you still need protection even though the NHS covers clinical negligence.

  • NHS Resolution schemes cover clinical negligence claims for NHS work in England; separate arrangements exist in the other UK nations.
  • Most doctors still join a medical defence organisation for GMC investigations, inquests, disciplinary support and advice.
  • Doctors doing private work need their own indemnity.
  • The GMC requires that you have appropriate cover before you practise.

What is covered, and what is not

  • NHS clinical negligence schemes cover claims about NHS care, but do not cover GMC fitness-to-practise proceedings, inquests, disciplinary advice or complaint support.
  • Each UK nation runs its own scheme for NHS care; cover for GPs and trust-employed doctors is arranged differently.
  • Private work, Good Samaritan acts, medico-legal reports and some roles need separate indemnity.

The three major UK defence organisations are the MDU, MPS and MDDUS. Compare benefits and costs; many offer discounts to doctors in training.
