Every UK medical school publishes its own entry requirements, and they differ. The patterns below are typical; check each school’s page every year before you choose your subjects.

QualificationTypical expectation
A-levelsUsually AAA or A*AA. Chemistry is required almost everywhere and Biology is required or strongly preferred. The third subject is often free, and some schools ask for a second science or Maths.
Scottish Highers / Advanced HighersUsually AAAAB or better at Higher, sometimes with Advanced Highers in sciences.
International BaccalaureateOften 36–40+ points with Higher Level Chemistry and Biology.
GCSEsMost schools set minimum English, Maths and Science grades; some score GCSEs as part of selection.

What to do now

  • Choose Chemistry and Biology (or check the alternatives for the schools you like) before you start Year 12 or equivalent.
  • Check whether schools you like have contextual offers (a lower grade offer if you meet widening-participation criteria).
  • Look at each school’s policy on resits, gap years and re-applications.
  • Take a third subject you can get an A in; a good grade matters more than a “prestigious” subject.
