- Your first week. Induction, IT access, shadowing and handover. Ask everything.
- Supervision. You always have a named educational and clinical supervisor.
- Prescribing. You will prescribe from day one. Learn your hospital’s guidelines and use the BNF.
- On-call and nights. Know the escalation routes and use them early.
- Portfolio. Record case-based discussions, mini-CEX, DOPS and reflection regularly, not in a rush before the ARCP.
- Wellbeing. Join the doctors’ mess, take your breaks, see your GP and use the BMA and employer support services.
At the end of F1 you apply to the GMC for full registration once your supervisor and the foundation school confirm you met the requirements.
Typical assessments in the e-portfolio
- Supervised learning events (SLEs): mini-CEX, case-based discussion, direct observation of procedural skills.
- Multi-source feedback from colleagues and the team assessment of behaviour.
- Reflective practice, including significant events and teaching you gave.
- Supervisor reports at the end of each placement and an annual ARCP.
If something goes wrong
Mistakes happen. Tell your supervisor early, follow your trust’s incident process, and use the duty of candour with patients. Support and remediation are far better than concealment.
