Exams

  • What is PLAB? The GMC test for most overseas-qualified doctors: PLAB 1 (written) and PLAB 2 (clinical). See the PLAB 1 and PLAB 2 pages.
  • How much does it cost? From 1 April 2026: PLAB 1 £283 and PLAB 2 £1,036 per attempt. The GMC may change these; check its fees page.
  • How long is a pass valid? You must pass PLAB 2 within two years of passing PLAB 1. Check the GMC for the current rule.
  • How many attempts do I get? There is a limit (currently four per part, with a waiting period afterwards and a route to apply for an additional attempt). Check the GMC page.
  • Where can I sit them? PLAB 1 in the UK, Europe and a list of overseas centres; PLAB 2 only in Manchester. See the exam centres directory.

Registration and work

  • Do I need English test scores as well? Yes, unless you qualify for an exemption. See the English-language page.
  • Can I work in the UK before PLAB? Not as a doctor with a licence to practise. Some people take non-medical or unlicensed roles. Do not practise without registration.
  • What happens after PLAB 2? You apply for registration with a licence to practise, then need a job and a visa. See the pathway pages.
  • Is a UK training post guaranteed after PLAB? No. Read the Prioritisation Act page and plan for service posts first.

Money and wellbeing

  • Can I get help with fees? The GMC offers reduced fees to refugee doctors living in the UK. Some charities help with costs; check eligibility.
  • I am struggling with the stress. What should I do? Talk to a friend, your doctor and your family. In the UK, Samaritans is available on 116 123, 24 hours a day.
